Between books (and how the week is going)

I’m on staycation this week. With the coronavirus over our heads, there’s nowhere to go. Here’s where the books come in.

“Why are you between so many books?” Joey asks. He tends to complete one before moving onto the next.

The truth is I’m easy to tire, and adding more to my queue gives me variety-a reprieve from boredom. But boredom’s something I’m learning to accept.

“I never thought the apocalypse would be so boring,” said a friend of ours. I suppose we expected the beginning of the end to include action, frenetic energy. We thought the heroes would wield weapons and fight the undead. Now we know they wear scrubs and struggle to keep people from dying.

My goal is to nourish my soul and revive my creativity while I’m on staycation. I like my work, and I love my coworkers. But I need that spark that gets me out of bed every day. Something hopeful.

Books from the library include:

  • Deep Work by Cal Newport
  • 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do by Amy Morin

Books I own but haven’t completed include:

  • A History of Canada in Ten Maps by Adam Shoaltz
  • Invested by Danielle Town

This week looks like this: I wake up and meditate. I check Discord to see what my friends are up to. I read books. Joey wakes up and makes coffee. He watches the news to get article ideas. We drink our cuppas and sit together. He writes, and I contemplate writing. I go back to reading and squeeze in an episode or two of a cartoon I’m into. I listen to music while I read. We may get groceries later. Then we’ll play video games.

It’s a simple life, for the week at least. And then I’m back to it next week. The bittersweet part was that we would have been in BC visiting our families by now if it wasn’t for Covid-19. I suppose it’s not so bad. I have my books, and I can travel wherever I want in those pages.
